Enhanced integrated protection for corporate online users

1 June 2004

The growth rate of system and software vulnerabilities has increased at an astonishing rate in the last few months and new viruses are occurring more frequently, as new vulnerabilities are being discovered. With this proliferation comes an increased need for information security solutions that will effectively and efficiently protect enterprises against these threats.
Although the number of virus attacks has decreased in the last year, the impact on the corporate market has increased significantly. In 2003, nine major virus outbreaks were recorded, with a number of less significant ones and although lower than the previous year's figure of 12 major and 34 minor incidents, the types of attacks and replications are becoming more concerning year on year.
In previous years, the market often became aware of vulnerabilities at least two months prior to an outbreak, giving them the ability to make patches readily available for any breaches, however, in 2003 this time frame has diminished to a matter of weeks.
Through a thorough understanding of enterprise requirements and the continued commitment to ensuring online security and privacy, Symantec, the global leader in information security and integrity, has developed Symantec Client Security 2.0, a solution which provides 'zero-day' protection for enterprise clients from malicious code, unauthorised intrusions and port scans.
The term 'zero-day' refers to the solution's ability to provide immediate protection for customers from blended threats, commonly known as an attack on the organisations' internal security system, whereby methods are imported to cause difficulty for the company. Therefore, while a customer is deploying the appropriate patch, the solution will act as a shield of defence until the downloading is complete, ensuring optimum security measures throughout the period of the threat.
With this in mind, this form of immediate protection is vital when highlighting the fact that 54% of malicious code submissions to Symantec's response centre over the last six months was made up of blended threats. With the multitude of threats invading enterprises, this solution protects the company's endpoints from unwanted intruders connecting to the corporate network.
Symantec now also provides a much faster response time during a blended threat outbreak, due to Symantec Client Security's single update mechanism, which combines firewall rules and intrusion detection signatures. The integration of multiple security functions is more efficient and effective than multiple product updates and enables Symantec to provide quick and comprehensive updates in a single LiveUpdate session when malicious code attacks occur.
Symantec Client Security 2.0 is a centrally managed client security solution that includes a number of new feature enhancements, such as:
* Outbound E-Mail Worm Blocker blocks suspicious outbound e-mail activity, thus preventing client systems from being used to propagate mass mailer threats.

* VPN Compliancy Check supports Symantec's recent initiative to develop a new client compliancy application program interface (API) providing IT administrators with the ability to block access to an organisation's network when a computer's security level does not meet the requirements of that organisation's policy.

* Location Awareness ensures the client firewall policy is adhered to, regardless of the location of the machine or the access method that a client used.

* Expanded Threat Detection allows administrators to ensure systems are free of applications that are not a security threat but can jeopardise the productivity level.

* Threat Tracker tracks the origin of infections spread through open file shares such as with FunLove or Nimda.

* Pre-Configured Client Firewall Policies speeds up the deployment of Symantec Client Security by including three pre-configured firewall policies: standard, remote and hardened.

* POP3/SMTP Mail Scanning provides incoming POP3 and outgoing SMTP e-mail body text and attachment protection against fast-moving, e-mail-based threats, which is ideal for remote and mobile users.

* Client Profiling minimises the number of alerts generated by the client firewall as new applications access the network or Internet.
