Safika acquires 25% of Ian Melamed Secure Computing

1 August 2000

Safika Holdings, the black-owned IT and telecommunications group, has acquired 25% of Ian Melamed Secure Computing for an unspecified amount in cash. Ian Melamed Secure Computing is one of South Africa's leading information security specialist companies. It recently launched a globally patented satellite-based antivirus and back-up service aimed at helping organisations bypass and overcome software viruses, such as the recent spate of malicious viruses that have crippled business worldwide. Vuli Cuba, Chairman of Safika Holdings, says his group and Ian Melamed, MD of Ian Melamed Secure Computing, have been business and technology partners for some time. Safika was particularly attracted to Melamed's satellite technology. "As a group we are heavily involved in IT and telecommunications," says Cuba, "and information security is very important for us. Ian's approach, via satellite, gives us a globally competitive solution."
Safika Holdings numbers government, parastatals, MTN and Telkom among its major clients. It will market Melamed's satellite-based services to them through Safika Security, a division of Safika Integrated Services. Cuba says Safika has options to increase its investment in Ian Melamed Secure Computing. "Apart from the investment, we will also assist with the day-to-day financial management of Ian's business, and let Ian focus on his interactions with clients," he added.
