Simeka takes majority stake in Mint

1 April 2008

JSE AltX-listed Simeka Business Solutions Group has acquired a majority stake in Microsoft-centric enterprise search, collaboration and content management specialist Mint for an unspecified sum of cash. The acquisition was effective 1 December 2007. Simeka has done this by buying out former majority shareholder NOUS.
Through the transaction, Simeka Business Solutions Group gains a substantial Microsoft services business and Mint gains the partnership of a larger empowered IT organisation, among other benefits.
"Simeka is very excited about this acquisition as we gain much," says Peter Stock, executive for the Microsoft Business at Simeka Consulting. "We have added a globally recognised Microsoft partner to our stable, which adds to the momentum we all ready have in our other solution areas. It gives us further opportunity for cross-selling and up-selling the group's services to our combined client base.
"We now have more than 110 people focused on the design and delivery of Microsoft solutions, from the database up to application level. This takes us a step closer to our vision of an holistic Microsoft business."
Mint MD Grant Hodgkinson says the acquisition is in line with the company's declared strategy to expand into new markets and technologies and develop new skills, partly through the right partners.
"We gain access to new customers, particularly in the public sector, and a shareholder which will enable accelerated expansion," says Hodgkinson. "As part of the stated intent of Simeka to build a substantial Microsoft business, we are finalising plans to accelerate Mint's service offering and expand its national and international footprint."
Simeka in turn gains access to Mint's international presence. Mint operates throughout Africa and has secured success in the Middle East. With the backing of Simeka and its credentials, Mint can now accelerate its development into even more regions, where enterprise search and content management solutions, inter alia, are in demand.
Already a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, Simeka Business Solutions Group is one of South Africa's fastest growing IT groups. It employs more than 1000 people, and reported revenues of R309 million and profit after tax of R35 million for the interim period ended 30 November 2007. Simeka has Level 4 BEE compliance: more than 50% of the group's ownership is in black hands, 70% of group executives are black, 90% of board members are black, and 20% of board members are female.
