Symantec recently announced its acquisition of the South African Enterprise Security Management Division of IT services company, Foster-Melliar. The deal strengthens Symantec's consultancy services capability in South Africa and makes it the largest Internet security company in the country with more than 24 staff.
As a result of the acquisition, Symantec has appointed former Foster-Melliar Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Evans, as South Africa Country Manager, replacing Kevin Isaac who becomes Middle East and Africa Regional Manager for Symantec based in Dubai. Thirteen Foster-Melliar employees, all of whom hold the Information Systems Exam Board certificate in security management, will transfer to Symantec.
The acquisition expands the range of security consultancy services Symantec will offer to South African businesses. Symantec Security Services provides information security solutions that incorporate best-of-breed technology, security best practices and expertise, and global resources to help enable e-business success. In cooperation with South African partners, Symantec Security Services delivers holistic security assessments, planning and implementation, proactive solutions for security management and response, and knowledge transfer to develop internal security skills.
"Internet security is a core element of good business practice and South Africa businesses increasingly demand high quality professional advice and service to complement first class technical solutions," says Isaac.
"For 10 years, Foster-Melliar was the primary distributor of products developed by AXENT Technologies, the company Symantec acquired at the end of 2000. It sold security solutions to seven of the country's 10 largest companies so clearly it brings a good understanding of both enterprise security needs and our technology."
Paolo Ardemagni, Vice President of Symantec's southern region said: "The South African market is fast-growing and offers huge potential. The acquisition of Foster-Melliar's enterprise security management division adds considerably to our professional consultancy service capability. In conjunction with our channel partners, we can now offer South African businesses a truly holistic security service encompassing the broadest range of technology solutions, services and research."
